Bill Bans Online Consumer Tracking
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Landmark legislation that would prevent online monitoring of consumers faces a key vote Tuesday at the state Capitol.
SB761 by Sen. Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, would allow consumers to opt out of tracking by companies that do business in California.
“Consumers should have the right to choose if their private information…is collected, analyzed and profiled by companies tracking activities online,” John Simpson of Consumer Watchdog said.
Consumer Watchdog is a Santa Monica-based advocacy group. It is a major sponsor of the bill.
Opponents of the legislation include the Association of California Insurance Companies and the California Banking Association.
